We often see Requesters use Mechanical Turk to annotate videos, images or other digital assets, usually with a business objective in mind. Programmer and artist Lauren McCarthy took a more personal approach. According to a recent article in Fast Company, McCarthy is interested in exploring ways technology can be used to “augment, subvert, alter, mediate, and ultimately deepen social interaction.” To this end, McCarthy developed an application using Mechanical Turk to augment her social interactions in the context of… dating.
Learn more about how McCarthy used Mechanical Turk to collect real-time feedback on her expressions and comments by having Workers review and analyze live video from her dates. In some cases she used the application to collect input on what to say next or specific questions to ask - an interesting strategy for avoiding the awkward silence.
Looking to augment your own dating performance? Word is that McCarthy has plans to create an make an easy-to-use application based on her experiment.
Happy Valentine’s Day from the team at Mechanical Turk.
